FGV , the Valencia Rail Authority has refused to employ a young woman because of her weight , they claim that she is too fat .
She is better qualified than all of the other candidates who applied for the job .It does state in the job specification that applicants should not have a body mass index of more than 34 . This is a figure calculated on weight , height and body fat .
Despite losing 25 kilos over the past year the woman has been told that she still runs the risk of circulatory problrems and cannot sell tickets or work with a computer .
The union is trying to intercede and they feel that the decision is based totally on her physical appearance as she is totally mobile and more than qualified to do the job .
The young woman says that FGV are giving the impression that she is a risk to the public , which she is not .
The response from FGV is that the job specification is much broader and that there could be times when she would need to change points and direct proceedings at the railway lines , for which mobility is vital .

Due to the exploitation of water reserves and the reduction in agriculture there is a strong possibility that one third of Alicante Province could become a desert .
Couple with this erosion and climate change and the rate of land change has increased dramatically ..
The Ministry of the Environment’s Rural and Marine department has started to ring the alarm bells .Already there is desertification of over 90,000 hectares and another 90,000 hectares is at risk . This would be almost one third of the province .
The areas most at risk are the Alto and Medio Vinolopo , the Marina Baja and L’Alacanti .
Humans are one of the main causes but also forest fires are also causing irreparable damage in the north of the province .
The region is now classified as semi-arid , apart from a small area in the north which has a higher rainfall .The Head of Geography at Alicante University has placed the blame squarly on the shoulders of overdevelopment and has sidelined the climate change theories .
The abandonment of agriculture is one of the main causes of the land changes .

Many organisations have helped by donating time and monies to the opening of the Costa Blanca Samaritans .
The Calpe office has already opened and the one in Torrevieja is opening soon . The organisation is there to listen to those who have problems and who need to share them with someone else . People who need a sounding board to enable them to solve their own problems , the Samaritans organisation is not an advice bureau .They listen and help to understand if they are able.
It is an organisation which has been working in the UK for over 50 years and it has taken 3 years to set it up here on the Costa Blanca with the help of the Careline Theatre in Calpe and the Benissa Lions .
At the moment the lines are open from Monday to Wednesday from 19.00 to 22.00. In the future they want to have a 24/7. However when anyone calls outside these hours they will be re-directed to the UK. Of course all calls are totally confidential .
Volunteers have to be over the age of 18 and need no experience as training is given .
