Last week in the Spanish parliament there was a surprise result when MP´s voted 131 to 129 in favour of urging the government to ban the covering of faces in public places. This would mean any headgear or any head garment which would prevent identification in a public place. The motion was brought by the Partido Popular and it won the support of the Catalan and basque nationalist parties. The ban would include the burqua and the niqab worn by muslim women.

Northern Ireland was the scene of an arrest of a 40 year old man wanted by the Spanish police in connection with the explosion of 4 car bombs in Spain in 2001.One of the bombs killed a police officer and an army officer.Madrid is expected to ask for the extradition of this alleged ETA terrorist.

Explosives for a different use were the cause of arrests in Galicia last week. The police confiscated more than 150 kilos of explosives used by the local fishermen to catch sardines. They also seizes 1000 detonators and arrested 12 people who now face being charged with offences against the environment.Other fishing towns in the region are also being investigated.
