Costa de la Luz Tragedy

Last week nine people perished in their attempt to arrive in Spain. They were being transported from Africa in an open boat which went aground in waters off Barbate near Cadiz on the Costa de la Luz.The latest body to be found was on a beach nearĀ  Los Canos de Meca.It is thought that there could have been 40 people on the boat and of the 15 survivors three Moroccans have been arrested ,accused of homicide through negligence. They have also been charged with offences against the rights of foreign citizens.

The number of people who attempt this incredibly dangerous crossing has decreased recently .Some say that the decrease is related to the economic crisis and some say that the systems of surveillance have improved so much that the focus for these illegal immigrants has moved up the coast. However similar systems for observing the coastline are being installed as far up as Javea on the Costa Blanca.
